Training Facilities

Nursing

Blacktown Family Medical Centre has agreements with the following participating universities to provide clinical placements in training nurses in a General Practice environment;-

-          School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Western Sydney

-          Sydney Nursing School, University of Sydney

-          Nursing School, Australian Catholic University

Nurses are able to have the opportunity to learn the following objectives;-

  • Think critically about how health care professionals communicate with patients in a primary health care setting
  • Extend own skills in applying appropriate methods of communication when interacting with patients and their families in community environments
  • Participate in care planning, co-ordination and review of the care of children, adolescents and adults who present to a primary health care setting
  • Consolidate and transfer prior learning into a health care setting. For example patient assessment (including BP, P, T, R, urinalysis and BSL), perform simple dressings and administer medications (oral, eye, ear and ointments)
  • Critically analyse the importance of inter-professional and multi agency teams caring for the needs of children, adolescents and adults who present with acute or chronic health problems to a primary health care setting
  • Explore the ways in which individual people subjectively experience their illness
  • Develop an awareness of the mechanisms and structures that enables the seamless delivery of care between service and agencies
  • Further develop skills in working collaboratively with others

Nursing Students Testimony

“Dear Blacktown Family Medical centre,

I like to express my gratitude for all your help, guidance and experience within the past 5 weeks of my placement here.

I hope I can be half as good as the nurses in the treatment room. It’s people like you who make a difference in this world with your unconditional compassion and dedication.

Thank you to all the Doctor’s for allowing me to assist and observe in procedures. It has been a pleasure working with you.

Special thanks to Nancy for guiding and mentoring me for the past 5 weeks. I have gained a lot and definitely will take what I’ve learnt with me in my future career in nursing.

Let’s not forget Min, Jelena and Mel. Thank you for your guidance and tolerance with me for the past five weeks.

From Jnay (UWS).
